NAFC-FC Texas Troubador Wins 2014 National Amateur Championship Stake
When owner-handler Martha Russell and her talented 5-year-old Labrador Retriever “Tubb” went to the line in the 10th and final series of the National Amateur Championship Stake in Roseburg, Oregon, both were calm and confident. And it paid off. Russell and Tubb performed flawlessly in the challenging final series, and in the process won the prestigious 2014 National Amateur Championship Stake.
“That’s the kind of 10th series you dream about,” says Russell, who is no stranger to national competitions and has dreamed of winning one since she started the field trial game 40 years ago. “It was a thrill to compete and finish that way.”
Tubb outperformed more than 100 of the finest retrievers in the country to earn his place among National Amateur Champions and field trial retriever history.
With the win, Russell joins her husband, John, an accomplished owner and handler and 44-year veteran of retriever trials, in handling a National Amateur Champion. He handled the famous NAFC-FC Adams Acres Cherokee Rose (“Rose”) to win the 2003 National Amateur Championship Stake.
Tubb was whelped Jan. 12, 2009, and is out of NFC-AFC Candlewood’s Something Royal and FC-AFC Weezer Retreezer.
“As a puppy, you could tell he had phenomenal eyesight,” Russell says. “Tubb would look out and see things at a great distance, watching the bird all the way. That trait is something they’re born with. They either have it, or they don’t.”
Russell says Tubb’s tremendous marking ability, coupled with a keen desire to retrieve and a willingness to do whatever you want him to do, makes Tubb a special retriever. She adds that Tubb has a knack for knowing where he needs to be, and, for getting himself out of trouble.
As for this talented retriever’s name, Tubb is named after country legend Ernest Tubb and his Texas Troubadours.
Russell and Tubb will compete in the 2014 National Open in November, and are qualified for the 2015 National Amateur. Tubb is fueled by Purina® Pro Plan® SPORT Performance 30/20 Formula.
